This project centers the neuroanatomical and functional basis of behavioral adaptation to motor impairment following ischemic stroke in adult animals (rodents) and its contribution to functional outcome. A major focus of the most recent project period is on testing the hypotheses that skill learning and “re-learning” with the nonparetic and paretic forelimbs compete in shaping patterns of synaptic reorganization in peri-infarct tissue as investigated over time using live animal imaging approaches.
