Dr. Manuel Ramirez III

Principal Investigator

Dr. Ramirez was born and reared in the borderlands of South Texas having one foot in the U.S. and the other in Mexico. He attended the University of Texas at Austin where he obtained his BA in Psychology in 1960 and his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology in 1963. His first faculty appointment was at California State University in Sacramento, and subsequent faculty appointments were at Rice University, Pitzer College of the Claremont Colleges, University of California at Riverside, and University of California at Santa Cruz before returning to UT Austin in 1980. Dr. Ramirez is currently a Professor in Clinical Psychology and Director of the Multicultural Lab.

He developed the first organized course in Latinx Psychology in 1968 titled, ”The Psychology of the Latinx Child” (a version of this course is still taught in Latinx Studies of the Claremont Colleges). His first book co-authored with his mentor, Alfredo Castaneda, was published by Academic Press in 1974. Other books he has authored are: “Psychology of the Americas: Mestizo Perspectives in Personality and Mental Health” (1983), “Multicultural/Multiracial Psychology” (1998), and Multicultural Psychotherapy: An Approach to Individual and Cultural Differences” (1999). The latter book was published by Jason Aronson’s International Psychotherapy Institute in 2016.

Dr. Ramirez is currently PI of a research project with collaboration from Dr. Norma Rodriguez and Dr. Julia Gallegos-Guajardo on culture, and coping with stress in university students of different ethnic groups. He has recently completed cross-cultural research on emotion regulation and OCD in Mexico and the US.

He is Professor Emeritus of Psychology and Director of the lab.

Dr. Ramirez will no longer accept graduate students but will accept lab RAs.

Vanessa Lopez, M.A.

Project Manager

Vanessa joined the research lab in 2019, initially serving as a research assistant and later promoted to lab manager. She holds an MA in Communication and a BA in Psychology from The University of Texas at Austin. Vanessa’s research interests encompass a wide range of topics within psychology and communication, with a particular focus on the intersections of technology, mental health, and social behavior.
